Many people would like to add a form of revenue to their blog prior to reaching the Ezoic 10k level to at least start a trickle of income. This is quite fast to achieve in most WordPress websites with the default sidebar, footer, and a plugin to add ad placement within your posts.
Adding ads will help give you a small amount of income, I do really want to point out with AdSense the minimum payout is $100, most of their ads don’t pay out well enough overall and you may not hit that $100 before you move to Ezoic.
Beneficially, you need an active Adsense account in good standing for YouTube so getting this account started and gaining a little income may help you pull YouTube ad revenue out a little sooner.
There are 3 core locations you can target with Adsense and other small advertising companies like SOVRN, Media.net, and Adsense. These are the sidebar, the footer at the end of your page, and in content. Sidebar is a favorite for many by adding in a plugin like Q2W3 which allows you to make a widget “sticky” so it stays on the page as the user scrolls.
The traditional spot most people who read websites have seen ads, this is the side bar along the edge, traditionally the right edge, of the content within the website.
This Area ==========================>
This space can be very valuable with a sticky advertisement, the sticky ad means that the ad doesn’t leave the screen as the user continues to scroll the ad continues to show and load a new one over time.
Less valuable for those who don’t get an option for a “sticky” footer ad, the footer area at the bottom of the page means that the ad will be shown only in the eventuality that someone should read all the way down past the content and comments to the footer area.
This is definitely worth putting an ad in but the expected return is going to be fairly minimal to income until you reach an ad vendor who can run a sticky footer ad, in most cases a sticky footer ad will make the most income for your site as it shows the entire read time on mobile and desktop the same.
This one is the most tricky to set up as there is no core area to install ads in almost all themes. What you will need to do is install an Ad Insert plugin which will allow you to add the code for an ad snippet in specific places within your content.
Plugin [ Ad Inserter by Igor ]
This software allows for you to insert ads into sections within the content of your posts, before them and after them which allows for immense ad placement options.
If you are in the AdSense, Media.Net, or Sovrn part of your site where you don’t have enough views for Ezoic qualification. This allows you to build a single ad unit and implement it within your content every 4-6 paragraphs to get some ad revenue rolling in.
In the example above we have an AdSense Ad Widget built inside Google Adsense and added into Block 1. Block 1 is set (at the bottom) to be shown on posts and after every 4 paragraphs.
This allows you to configure a single nice in-content ad and serve it every so often in your content to get you some income.
The benefit to this setup is that you can easily remove the AdSense slot for Ezoic later without much effort when done with this method.
